XBOX 360 WIRELESS
CONTROLLER MOD CHIP KIT INSTALL GUIDE
1 - Determining your controller type: There are two primary ways to determine controller type. One that requires opening the controller case and one that does not. Of course the one that includes opening the case is the more absolute way so if you need to be 100% sure go ahead and open the controller up. As you will see when we continue with the installation instructions the Matrix connection for the sync button is on a chip not the sync button where the CG chip mainboard we connect to change modes right on the bottom of the sync button. Click here to see instructions for opening your controller. First - checking by simply removing the battery compartment.
Second - checking type by looking at the mainboard.
2 - Cracking your case and pulling the mainboard: The instructions for opening the case of a xbox 360 wireless controller are relatively simple. You first remove all the screws. Six of them are visible and easy to locate. The seventh screw is located under the serial number sticker found by removing the battery compartment. After all screws are removed you may carefully pull the rear case from the controller in a flip motion starting at the bottom of the controller. When doing this keep the controller face down so the buttons and other hardware will not fall all over the place. Now firmly holding left and right side of the mainboard wiggle board and lift it out. See photos below: 3 - Preparing your chip and fastening it to the mainboard: The process of fixing the chip on the mainboard is easy but you must pay attention to the orientation of the chip. First take the chip and with a pliers bend pins to a 90 degree angle as shown below. Next get ready to put the chip on the mainboard. Lay the board joysitcks up and battery connection down and bottom in front of you. The chip will be glued to the board on the right side of the right control stick just to the right of the plastic tab coming through the mainboard. To do this make sure that pin one(identified on chip by notch on the surface of the mod chip) is going to be at the bottom of the board or lower side when gluing in place. Now put a small ball of hot glue in location as shown by red circle and immediately stick chip down in glue. Push chip to sit flat on the mainboard and make sure it is not interfering with the hole on the board to the right side of the chip. See photos below: 3b - Preparing Tactiles and Chip Orientation Take the tactile and bend legs as shown - be careful not to break them off. Then solder two wires on the switches as shown - twist wires to add strength. ![]() Find two nice spots for holes for tactiles - drill and install buttons with hot glue to hold them in place. ![]() When install chip make sure you install it in the dead bug position as improper install can cause reverse chip placement which will cause chip to overheat and burnout. ![]() 4 - Locate schematic for your Mod chip/controller: Locate your schematic for your Matrix type controller.

Of course this sometimes includes the controller being thrown across the room although your kids may never tell you that. To do this you will hold the glue gun right at the chip and wire job and sort of inject hot glue into the whole works. You want to get it all over the stuff but not make a big ball on top of it so just enough to get in there should do the job. Be sure to also check all the wire routes and tack them in place with a touch of glue here and there so the wires will not come loose. Be sure not to get any glue on the round contact points where the buttons do there work on the board. Next after the glue has cooled we will hold the controller and flip the mainboard back into place bottom first. Double check the sync button to make sure it is in place and functions before putting the bottom cover back on. Now as you close back cover make sure battery contacts slide into housing first then slip over the top triggers. With a job well done you can now install batteries and check the led indicator to test for mode changes. 6 - GLOSSARY Checking your components - Resistors Installation and definition of a diode: A diode is a common electrical device that restricts flow of an electrical current. It can be simply thought of as a check valve for an electrical circuit. Any circuit that requires flow in a particular direction will contain diodes. |
